Copper Sculpture. Justice
Description
Cast Copper Figure. Excellent details, high quality patina and gilded finish.
Height: 55 cm.
The sculpture we reproduce is the Goddess Justice.
Since the 15th century, the Lady of Justice has often been depicted blindfolded. The blindfold represents objectivity, in that justice is, or should be imposed objectively, without fear or favour, regardless of identity, money, power or weakness; blind and impartial justice. Early Roman coins depict Justice with sword in one hand and scales in the other, but with her eyes uncovered. Justice is only commonly depicted as “blind” from the late 15th century onwards. The earliest known depiction of blind Justice is Hans Giengen’s statue of 1543 at the Gerechtigkeitsbrunnen (Fountain of Justice) in Bern.
